Rolfing® Structural Integration · Toronto

Feel JOY with a more aligned, functional body.

Injuries, everyday compensations, and repetitive strain quietly tighten your fascia over the years. Rolfing® works with your whole structure — not one sore spot at a time — so your body can hold itself with less effort.

Chronic pain has many causes, but one of the most common is: body misalignment paired with poor posture, showing up as back pain or discomfort anywhere in the body.

As a holistic therapy, Rolfing (SI) helps improve postural misalignments, making the body more aligned and balanced. It allows the body to feel more at ease requiring less effort to move. Normally an increased sensation of well-being is reported by those who experience Rolfing.

What is Rolfing?

Rolfing (SI) is a holistic form of bodywork that realigns the whole body by releasing and reorganizing the connective tissues, called fascia. It potentially resolves discomfort, reduces compensations, and alleviates pain.

A hands-on therapeutic method that addresses the whole body’s fascial network. Fascia is the tissue that surrounds your whole body, from every muscle, to your heart and lungs, encasing joints and influencing the nervous system.

Instead of focusing on symptoms, Rolfing focuses on the causes by organizing and improving the function of the whole body. It has a unique approach of working the relationships of the body, such as how the feet influence the hips or how the pelvis position affects the shoulders.

The Rolfer therapist uses different strategies, like movement and mild pressure to release the fascial network and restore balance and structural alignment in the body.

The Rolfing process enables the body to regain the natural integrity of its form, thus enhancing postural efficiency and your freedom of movement.

This is the gospel of Rolfing:
When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through.
Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.

Ida P. Rolf

Joyce is a holistic practitioner with a passion for natural health.

Joyce Cruvinel is a Certified Rolfer™, trained at the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado — the institute founded by Dr. Ida Rolf herself, which has certified Rolfers worldwide since the method began. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy and a Master’s degree in Human Kinesiology, and is a fully trained Pilates teacher with a background in post-rehabilitative Pilates.

Learn more

Joyce started her fitness journey at 8 years old with Classical Ballet, and by 17 was already teaching dance to kids and teenagers herself.

Her initial studies in Brazil were in Physical Education and as a Technician-Dancer, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy. She continued her path in Montreal with a Master’s Degree in Human Kinesiology, concentration in Ergonomics, where movement and postural analysis were at the core of her training.

Searching for improvements on her own posture and to overcome her injuries, Joyce discovered the benefits of Pilates. She became a fully certified Stott Pilates Instructor in Toronto and started teaching Pilates in 2008 — acquiring a vast amount of experience with post-rehab Pilates, working in physiotherapy clinics, gyms, and Pilates studios.

Joyce continued exploring a variety of movement and manual therapy forms, and later discovered Rolfing® Structural Integration. Having personally experienced its benefits — resolving her own misalignments, reducing chronic pain, and facilitating ease of movement — she became a Certified Rolfer™ at the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, CO, in 2015.

Joyce has since applied Rolfing Structural Integration to help her clients improve their posture, systematically optimize the structure and function of their bodies, and reduce tension and chronic pain.

Over the years, Joyce has experienced the benefits of combining Rolfing with Pilates to strengthen the body, helping her clients maintain greater effectiveness and hold the benefits of Rolfing for longer.

Joyce also trained extensively with French Osteopath Guy Voyer and became a Yoga Siromani through the Yoga Teacher Training at the Sivananda Yoga Farm in California. She maintains a regular Yoga and Pilates practice, with daily meditation, breathwork, and asanas.

Besides healing herself physically — getting stronger with Pilates, more flexible with Yoga, and more aligned with Rolfing — Joyce has also experienced the benefits of detoxifying her body to heal from the inside out. She experienced firsthand how much harder it is for a toxic body to heal. Born and raised in Brazil on a standard diet heavy in animal protein, dairy, sugar, and flour, her body was inflamed and she suffered from allergies as a young child. Over-prescribed antibiotics further damaged her immune system and gut, and she dealt with the consequences her whole adult life — intestinal issues, teeth weakness, gastritis, sinusitis, rhinitis, joint and chronic lower back pain, poor circulation, related injuries, and thyroid and uterine fibroid removal surgeries.

That’s what led her to nutrition. She found she could heal the aches and pains she’d long suffered by changing her diet and detoxifying her body, including her joints and muscles — addressing hidden allergies, cleaning up her body, and strengthening her immune system. Experiencing how much better a toxin-free body responds to therapy and movement made it clear to her how important a healthy lifestyle really is.

The results she experienced combining nutrition, Rolfing, Pilates, and Yoga were so life-changing that she decided to pursue the professional practice of all of these modalities, in order to help her clients achieve similar results.

Outside work, Joyce enjoys new trainings and being in nature with her dog — hiking, cycling, swimming, and walking barefoot on the beach. She’s also passionate about healthy cooking, especially making healthy desserts, as a form of relaxation and creative expression.

What Her Clients Are Saying

How I Work

“My goal is to help you to feel the joy of having a more functional and efficient body, by being more aligned, enabling you to move with ease.”

As a Rolfing therapist, I’m primarily concerned with the structural changes that can improve my client’s posture — reducing tension, potentially resolving discomfort, reducing compensations, and alleviating pain. Clients are asked to give feedback during sessions, since we achieve better results by working as a team. An active part of my work is increasing a client’s body awareness, helping them recognize the postural habits and compensations they may have carried for years, so they can work on their own to make lasting changes and avoid creating dependency on therapy.

According to each person’s body type and needs, my sessions are designed to address their particular issues, using different approaches and techniques. My clients usually experience an increased sense of well-being, and report a lasting impact on how they sit, stand, and carry themselves day to day.

Can Rolfing Help With Scoliosis?

Over the years, I have worked with a variety of body types and misalignments, and I’ve attracted a great number of clients with scoliosis. Having scoliosis myself, I deeply understand how it affects the body’s proprioceptive senses — the signals for body shape, position, movement, and muscle force. I’ve acquired vast experience treating scoliosis and have become more and more specialized, capable of helping my clients improve their own curve with great results. The picture above illustrates how much improvement — even an aging client with an accentuated scoliosis curvature, receiving a very light touch — can achieve through Rolfing. Results can vary considerably from person to person, depending on individual particularities and body toxicity.

How Rolfing Works

Dr. Rolf created the Rolfing Ten-Series® — a set of ten sessions that work step by step, systematically building upon each other to improve the body’s alignment and structure. Each session prepares the body for the next, balancing and optimizing the structure (shape) and function (movement) of the entire body over the course of the series.

Sessions 1–3, called the “sleeve” sessions, strive to loosen and balance surface layers of connective tissue. Sessions 4–7 are referred to as “core” sessions and address the terrain found between the bottom of the pelvis and top of the head, including the deep tissue of the legs for its role in support. Sessions 8–10 provide an opportunity to synthesize and integrate previously established advancements into the body’s structure, in a way that encourages grace and natural coordination.

Where Sessions Happen

Personalize to fit your specific preference.

In Joyce’s Home-Studio

A warm, cozy environment designed for you to feel relaxed, with aromatherapy and the soft amber glow of Himalayan salt lamps setting the tone.

In your own home

Priced slightly differently to account for travel (full pricing below). Ideal if getting out isn’t easy, or if you’d simply rather not drive anywhere right after a session.

Start With One Session. Decide From There.

Rolfing works best as a series — but you’ll never be asked to buy one before you’ve felt what a single session does for your body.

Book one session. If it’s not for you, that’s the end of it. If it is, Joyce will talk you through what a 3, 6, or 10-session series would look like for your specific case — and you can decide then, with your own body as the evidence.

Rolfing also works beautifully “à la carte” — you don’t have to commit to the full Ten Series to see results. Whatever you choose, your pace is respected.

Some people notice a shift after just one or two sessions. Others need a longer series to feel a lasting change. Joyce will walk you through what’s realistic for your body during your first conversation — no inflated promises, just an honest read on your case.

Single sessions are always available on their own — a 3, 6, or 10-session series is simply the recommended path for deeper, lasting change, never a requirement to get started. The 90-minute series is the option Joyce recommends most, since it allows more time for thorough work in each visit.

What to expect

What to Expect

Before the hands-on work on the massage table, a postural static and dynamic assessment (gait analysis) is performed to assess imbalances and misalignments of the body. Throughout the session, the client’s fascia (connective tissue) is manipulated to allow it to return to a balanced relationship with soft tissues, which allows the entire body to release compensations, reorganize, and realign.

There is a movement component that may occur within a Rolfing SI session, where clients are asked to perform slow movements while the fascia network is being manipulated. The last part of the session may be done seated on a bench, where the client’s spine is manipulated with or without spinal movements. And at the very end, a quick re-assessment is done to check the results achieved.

Rolfing Dressing Code

The Rolfing sessions are done with the client wearing a tank top and gym shorts or underwear, whichever is more comfortable for you. Women can wear a bra (or sports bra) and underpants. Men can wear shorts or jockey-style briefs.

It is advised not to wear skin oil or body lotion the day of the session — otherwise the skin will be ‘slippery,’ affecting the grip needed to access the fascia and preventing the achievement of optimum results.

What this could look like for you

Rolfing® SI Can Provide Benefits Beyond the Physical

Rolfing® Structural Integration works directly with the body’s connective tissue, but it’s very common for clients to report benefits that extend far beyond the physical body. Once tension unwinds and posture improves, the impact on a person’s well-being is visible. To illustrate, imagine someone who’s used to looking down, and then starts to stand tall and look up after doing Rolfing — the way this person sees the world changes completely. Very often clients report experiencing shifts in emotional well-being, mental clarity, and their overall relationship with themselves.

Freedom of Movement

Move through your day with more range and less effort, without bracing against tight spots.

Skilled, Attentive Touch

Every session is guided by your feedback and shaped around your body’s particular pattern.

Change That Lasts

Built layer by layer, so results hold over time instead of fading within a week.

Common questions

Common Questions

What is Rolfing, really?

Rolfing (Structural Integration) is a hands-on approach that works with your fascia — the connective tissue around your muscles — to help reorganize how your body holds tension, instead of treating one spot at a time.

Will this actually work for someone like me?

Rolfing tends to help most with chronic, ongoing patterns rather than acute injuries — things like neck and shoulder tension, scoliosis-related discomfort, low back and hip tightness, jaw tension, and the wrist and forearm tightness that builds up from years at a keyboard. If your pain keeps showing up in the same places, or seems to move around without ever fully resolving, that’s usually a good sign this approach is worth exploring. Joyce can help you figure out if your case is a good fit during your first conversation.

Is it painful?

The Rolfing method has been modernized over the years and become a more contemporary, non-invasive type of therapy. Sessions are done according to each client’s tolerance and particularities, such as age, level of fitness, and medications taken. Joyce works to release the fascia in layers, one layer at a time — as we say, “peeling onions.” The amount of pressure applied is also subject to client feedback: you guide the therapist according to your tolerance level. Most clients feel a sensation of relief instead of pain, and depending on the circumstances, only a light touch is needed to obtain great results. As one client put it: “the old adage of Rolfing being painful is no longer true.”

How much does it cost?

Single sessions start at $160 + tax (60 min) or $225 + tax (90 min) at Joyce’s home-studio, with better per-session pricing on 10-session packages — see the full breakdown above.

Is Rolfing covered by health insurance?

Rolfing® is commonly not covered by most health insurances in Ontario. However, you can check with your own insurance provider, as a few providers can cover it. Receipts can be provided for tax deduction purposes.

What should I wear?

Sessions are done with you wearing a tank top and gym shorts or underwear, depending on your comfort. Women can wear a bra (or sports bra) and underpants; men can wear shorts or jockey-style briefs — whatever lets Joyce clearly see your body’s alignment and work directly with your fascia.
